Building on our success
Building on the success of our Merchant Wind Power partnership with Ford, we have erected a third turbine at Ford’s Dagenham car factory in East London.
We’ve already got two turbines at the site, pumping out about 6.7 million units of clean electricity each year. And with London’s only commercial wind park set to gain a new turbine, that generation figure is set to increase a further 70% to 11.5 million units.
All the energy will go into the Dagenham Diesel Centre, helping Ford to continue building every single one of their diesel engines from 100% onsite wind energy.

Construction is Underway - 09 June 2011
We have finally begun the construction process for the 3rd turbine. Over the last few weeks we have been completing the ground works for the new turbine. So at the moment we have a large hole, but this is the steel can for the foundation is due to arrive today and will be installed over the weekend.
The pour of the concrete for the foundation is booked for middle of next week. Once this is completed the concrete will cure nearly 8 weeks before the sections of the turbine are delivered and installed.
Wrapping up the planning conditions - 28 September 2010
We’re currently in the process of discharging the planning conditions which we need to do before we can start building the third wind turbine. This has involved carrying out ground investigations to see if there is contaminated land below the surface and putting together a detailed programme of post-construction bird monitoring amongst other things. We’re working towards a turbine construction next summer.
Third turbine gets the go-ahead - 05 October 2009
We’ve finally received official confirmation that we can build a third wind turbine at Ford Dagenham. There was a slight delay as we negotiated with the RSPB on a draft condition but once that was resolved, the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation issued the decision through delegated powers. So it’s full steam ahead to build London’s third large-scale wind turbine.
Waiting for a final decision - 24 July 2009
Havering’s Planning Committee recommended the proposed wind turbine for approval on Thursday 16th July with a split of 9 votes in favour to just 1 against. The decision will now be made by London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and we hope to have a final decision in the next couple of weeks.
Planning application submitted - 02 April 2009
The planning application has now been submitted to the London Borough of Havering and the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC).
It’s a little bit of a convoluted planning process in London in that although the local council review the application and contact statutory consultees about it, the final decision rests with LTGDC with Havering Council making a recommendation. We’re hoping we will have a decision by the end of July. Fingers crossed.
Public exhibition announced - 03 February 2009
A date for the public exhibition has now been set in stone – it will be taking place at the ROYALS Youth Centre in Rainham on Wednesday 11th February. Come along to find out more about the project, and meet our planners who can answer your questions.
We’ll be there from 12 noon until 7pm on the day. But if you can’t make it, don’t worry a slimmed down version of the exhibition – including the photomontages – will be at Rainham Library from Friday 13th Feb to Friday 27th Feb.
Assessment time - 02 February 2009
We’ve carried out a whole range of assessments, including ornithology, hydrology, cultural heritage and landscape & visual impact, which will be presented in the Environmental Report to accompany the planning application.
That should be finished within the next month and will probably come in at about 100,000 words long (a lot more than your average PhD thesis)!! We’re nothing if not thorough.
